Series Descriptions

Penni's current works fall into six different series: Glassworks, Pottery, Flowers, Greece, Drums & Deco, and Cloth. All paintings are rich in color. Most are still lifes, some are outdoor scenes.

Glassworks Series. Sizes vary. Gouache.
"My Glassworks Series came about after viewing the Chihuly glass exhibit. His works in glass seem to be surreal and I now create glassworks that probably couldn't stand up but have his colorful flowers and wrapped vines within the shapes I make on paper. "

Drum and Deco Series. Sizes vary. Gouache.
"My Drum Series and the Deco Series are from loving nature, Native American handicrafts and Art Deco and Nouveau artifacts. I collect all these. I often put one into my work because these are always readily available for a painting. You might see a piece of driftwood, or a feather, a mirror with vines, and know that nature and the environment also influences my work."

Pottery Series. Sizes vary. Gouache.
"I take pottery classes as my weekly therapy and usually find an intriguing piece to place in my still lifes. Along with Native American handicrafts and instruments, I can create textures and patterns to add to the ambiance."

Flower Series. Sizes vary. Gouache.
"Sometimes when I spy new flowers or tree blossoms, I find myself spending a week or two creating many new pictures using them. Changing the background color or setting a mood or drawing the blossoms with ink and wetting it can make the flowers move."

Cloth Series. Sizes vary. Gouache.
"My Cloth Series has to do with me looking at fabrics and using them as the backdrop or table covering to help add the flavor of the still life. I love the way color is used in some prints. On my trip to Greece, I found an incredible scarf that I paint whenever I am looking for something to get my juices flowing. The textures and designs are where I start and create the mood by the patterns and colors of the fabrics or wallpapers. These add interests to many still life settings that otherwise would be just stuff on a table!"
